IN FOCUS: LEGACY OF AN ENDURING SPIRIT

Learn the stories behind the photographs in a special event featuring a presentation by photojournalist Paul Kitagaki, Jr. on Saturday, February 14. Since 2005, Kitagaki has mirrored historic images of Japanese Americans taken in 1942 by War Relocation Authority staff including Dorothea Lange and Tom Parker with his own contemporary photographs of the same individuals. Currently on display in the Museum’s exhibit, “Gambatte! Legacy of an Enduring Spirit,” his work documents his subjects’ legacy of strength and perseverance over their incarceration during WWII.
Tickets include entry to presentation, refreshments, admission to Museum exhibits and parking in the surface street lot at 10th & O Streets. Proceeds benefit NCTOR committee programming and the Museum’s “Time of Remembrance” program, providing students tours of the exhibit “Uprooted! Japanese Americans During WWII” led by a formerly-interned docents each spring.

The NCTOR and its educational partners, The California Museum, Elk Grove Unified School District, and the California State University, Sacramento, Library, Special Collection, plan these activities in remembrance of the signing of Executive Order 9066, which suspended due process and resulted in the unjust incarceration of approximately 120,000 Americans of Japanese ancestry into America’s concentration centers during World War II.
